Understanding Lal Kitab
Lal Kitab — literally “the red book” — refers to a body of astrological writing published in Urdu in five volumes between 1939 and 1952 and commonly attributed to Pandit Roop Chand Joshi. It has become popular for its distinctive way of reading the chart and for its practical, everyday remedies, known as upay.
A fixed-house chart
In Lal Kitab practice, the first house of the chart is always read as Aries, the second as Taurus, and so on. Planets keep the house positions they have in the ordinary birth chart, but each house carries the qualities of its fixed sign. This is why Lal Kitab readings speak mostly of “Saturn in the 8th house” rather than “Saturn in Leo”.
Because it depends on house positions, a Lal Kitab chart needs the ascendant — and therefore a reliable birth time.
Remedies (upay)
Lal Kitab remedies are typically simple acts: forms of charity, offerings, keeping or avoiding certain objects, or changes in conduct. They are tied to specific planetary placements, and practitioners interpret and apply them in different ways.
How Astroilaz approaches Lal Kitab
- We keep Lal Kitab separate from Parashari and other systems and label which tradition each point comes from.
- A remedy is suggested only when its documented chart condition matches your calculated Lal Kitab placements.
- Every remedy shows the edition and page or section it comes from, and has been reviewed before use.
- We exclude remedies that could be harmful, unsafe for animals, or that pressure you into spending money.
- Remedies are presented as traditional practices. We make no claim that they will produce any particular result.
